What To Do With Your Life Class of 2020 Senior Photographer

Meet Matthew! Class of 2020. He’s full of dreams and ambitions but he’s also chill and ready for life to unfold.

Graduating high school is NO easy feat. So really you should do a dance for this guy! Also deciding what you are going to major in for college is like an Olympic sort of deal. It’s epic and hard and takes a lot of endurance. You have so many options and you so rarely have enough life experience to know what you want to do with your life.

My wish for seniors is that they just try the best they can and have grace for themselves to take college as a growing and learning opportunity- but it doesn’t have to be their forever. If they are fortunate enough to know exactly what they want to do with their life then YAY, but I hope they know that is super rare!

I’m kind of that fortunate. I have a degree in photography!

Art has always been in my blood but honestly didn’t have a clue what I wanted to actually DO with my life when I started college. I chose art because it was a part of who I was and I wanted to learn more. And I chose photography as my concentration because I could not graduate with general art degree.

I was dabbling in photography, architecture, ceramics, painting, woodworking, and art history and they all were so fun, I picked photography because I liked to process and I LOVE composition.

I’ve always been better with arranging spaces rather than creating them. I have some friends who are just genius creators. They pull beautiful out of pure air! I’ve always found a way to make what I have beautiful. Photography feels like arranging to me. I have what I have and I work with it. Journalism appeals to me because of that specifically. I never went big into corporate photography because I wanted the ability to create what I found life in.

In my opinion a large part of being a photographer is the ability to create a beautiful image spacial/compositionally. I think the technical part can really be achieved by practice and dedication, but an eye for photography can only slightly be taught. And if it’s taught it often does grow. So I am incredibly lucky to have chosen a degree that I have made into a career.

But even with that being said I had NO idea what starting and operating a small business looked like.

Most of it isn’t even “photography” its marketing, networking, creating relationships. It’s accounting and editing and general business management. It’s all the things! A business degree would have helped a LOT in the beginning but it’s okay because I’m tough and a hard worker. I was dedicated to what I did and taught myself the ropes. There was plenty of failure along the way but without failure I wouldn’t grow and learn.

I’m pretty sure I’m inspired to write a new post about failure!!!!! But, for now enjoy this little sneak peak with Matthew’s senior photos 🙂
