Incorporating Family Heirlooms in Newborn Photography
Capturing the early days of a newborn’s life is always special, but when we can weave in elements of family history, it becomes even more meaningful for the family.
Recently, I had the privilege of photographing a newborn baby boy whose family I have been photographing since their engagement, wedding, first newborn, 6 months & one year + more sessions from their first daughter. And something that has been a part of our shoots since the first daughters newborn session was a cherished heirloom—a child-sized rocking chair! This same chair was first used in his older sister’s one-year photoshoot (see her cake smash session here) and before that, it was a sentimental part of her newborn nursery session – It feels like I was shooting Ella’s newborn session yesterday! Now, it holds her baby brother, continuing a tradition of love and connection through photography.
The Significance of Heirlooms in Photography
Incorporating heirlooms into newborn sessions adds depth and sentimental value. These cherished pieces connect generations and create a visual story that extends beyond a single moment. Whether it’s a rocking chair, a handmade quilt, a vintage toy, or a family cradle, these elements bring a sense of history and continuity to your baby’s first photos. They also ensure that these images will hold even more meaning as your children grow.
A Rocking Chair’s Journey Through Time
This particular child-sized wooden rocking chair has already played a starring role in this family’s photographic story. It first appeared in big sister’s newborn nursery session, tucked sweetly into the background as a symbol of the family’s love and heritage. Later, when she turned one year old, it was the perfect prop for her milestone session at the Royal Palms. And now, it holds her newborn baby brother, showcasing how their family has grown while preserving a special connection between siblings.
Why Include Heirlooms in Your Newborn Photos?
- They add a personal, meaningful touch. Family heirlooms tell a story and add sentimental value to your images. They make your newborn session even more special.
- They create consistency across milestone sessions. If you plan to photograph your child at different stages, incorporating the same heirloom helps create a visual thread throughout the years.
- They provide a sense of history. These items often carry stories from past generations, making your baby’s first portraits even more timeless.
Tips for Incorporating Heirlooms in Your Session
- Choose items with emotional significance. Whether it’s a piece of furniture, a baby blanket passed down from a grandparent, or a beloved childhood toy, heirlooms should hold special meaning.
- Ensure the item is safe and functional. Before including an heirloom in your session, check that it’s in good condition. If it’s an older piece, a little TLC might be needed before it’s baby-ready.
- Communicate with your photographer. Let your photographer know about the heirloom in advance so they can plan how to incorporate it naturally into your session.
Preserving Memories for Generations
When we include heirlooms in newborn photography, we’re doing more than just taking pictures—we’re preserving family stories. Years from now, these photos will be more than just images; they’ll be keepsakes that tell a story of love, history, and tradition.
This newborn session was a perfect example of how something as simple as a rocking chair can carry deep meaning across different milestones. I feel honored to document these moments, knowing that this little chair will continue to be part of their family’s journey for years to come.
