4 Reasons Why 6 Months Is The Perfect Age For A Photoshoot

4 Reasons Why 6 Months Is The Perfect Age For A Photoshoot

If you are trying to decide what age you should hire a professional photographer to capture your babies life, consider 6 months as a for sure add in. I even designed a package with a payment plan and my favorite suggested sessions to help you just schedule and plan it ahead of time. Take the stress out of the equation and just show up for the shoot!

Most of my “Grow With Me” and “The Baby Experience” packages include Maternity, Newborn & One Year- because these are the most common shoots I am asked to photograph. However I also suggest adding in a 6 month shoot.

6 Months is the PERFECT age for a photoshoot because of a few reasons.

1 Baby is alert & smiling!

It’s totally true your baby is at one of the most smiley stages- and they say it’s more undiscriminating & not yet selective as closer to 9 months… AND Did you know the smiles under 2 months are actually just a reflex? It’s true! Their real smile usually appears between 2 months – 3 months. So by 6 months they have mastered it and are delighted by life and YOU! by 9 months they become more selective. So catch that SMILE on film!!!!

Your baby’s reflex smile will disappear by time she’s 2 months old, and her first real one will make an appearance somewhere between one-and-a-half to 3 months (or 6 and 12 weeks) of life. About 6 Months: Undiscriminating Smile While all babies develop at their own pace — and some babies are just a lot more smiley than others — midway into your child’s first year, she’ll most likely be a smiling expert. “Six-month-old babies grin at you no matter what you do,” says Dr. Cowan.

2 Baby is not yet experiencing strong separation anxiety

Around 9 months of age babies start to experience very strong separation anxiety and as a result it’s much harder to capture smiles & happy baby. They also get pretty scared of me! haha. That’s not a great combo for photos. But at 6 months like we discussed above they are super smily & non discriminating. They have a little separation anxiety but not super strong stranger danger as long as the parents are nearby with smiles they most likely will at least look at camera and I’ll win them over to smiles for me by the end!

Although some babies display object permanence and separation anxiety as early as 4 to 5 months of age, most develop more robust separation anxiety at around 9 months. The leave- taking can be worse if your infant is hungry, tired, or not feeling well.

3 Baby Is Sitting Up But Not Yet Mobile!

It’s true! 6 Months is my favorite because you can sit baby up most of the time BUT they can’t really move yet! haha. You might need to wait until 7 months for them to sit up but around 6 months most of them can at least sit with a little support. Or at least they can get into the rocking position of the pre-crawl – which makes REALLY cute photos! But they can’t run or crawl away from me too fast! Which means I get lots more in focus photos! haha.

At 4 months, a baby typically can hold his/her head steady without support, and at 6 months, he/she begins to sit with a little help… 9 months he/she sits well without support, and gets in and out of a sitting position but may require help. At 12 months, he/she gets into the sitting position without help.

4 Babies hit peek cuteness at 6 months- Science agrees!

There are a lot of articles you can find that says babies hit peek cuteness at 6 months of age. And I agree! They are SOOOO cute and squishy still. Plenty of adorable rolls, cubby cheeks, bright huge curious eyes & loads of smiles!

Newborns are ugly. Surveys suggest we don’t find babies particularly cute until 3, or even 6 months of age, when the awkward old man features give way to chubby cheeks and big eyes. They then remain at peak cuteness from 6 months until around age 4-and-a-half.

So my friends these are just 6 reasons why I think you should add in a 6 month shoot to your grow package! I even have a package with that shoot built in! Just like this family booked for baby Luca!

Check out Luca’s newborn shoot here. And enjoy his peek cuteness starting in this shoot and following for the next few year! Now let’s see if I can chase him fast enough for great photos during his 1 year shoot this winter. haha.
