5 Reasons to Book Standalone Holiday Sessions

If you’ve followed me for a while, you know how much I love holiday mini sessions. They’re one of my favorite traditions every year, and for so many families they’re the perfect fit.

But they’re not the right fit for everyone.

Every holiday season, I have a handful of families who decide they’d rather book a full family session instead. That’s exactly what this couple did. We met in mid-September, photographed them in a studio, included their dogs, and created exactly the experience they were hoping for.

It made me realize this is a question worth answering: When does it make sense to book a standalone holiday family session instead of holiday minis?

1. Your Schedule Doesn’t Match Mini Session Dates

Holiday minis happen on specific dates, and once they’re full, they’re full.

Sometimes work gets busy. Kids have sports. Travel plans pop up. Life happens.

A standalone family session gives you flexibility. Instead of trying to squeeze your family into the preset available weekends, we choose a date that actually works for everyone. That alone can make the experience much less stressful.

2. You Want a Different Location

Every year I choose a handful of locations for holiday minis, but Phoenix has no shortage of incredible places to photograph families.

That’s exactly what these clients wanted. Having the freedom to choose their own location made a standalone session the perfect fit.

3. You Want Time to Relax

This is probably the biggest difference.

Mini sessions are intentionally efficient. Families arrive, we photograph them, and then it’s time for the next family.

A full session slows everything down. If someone needs a few extra minutes to warm up, we have them. If the light suddenly gets incredible, we can take advantage of it. If you want to try another outfit or walk to a second nearby spot, we can.

That extra time often means everyone feels more relaxed, and it shows in the photographs.

4. Your Pets Are Part of the Family

I love when families bring their dogs.

While many locations allow pets, bringing them to a mini session can feel a little rushed. Most families want photographs with everyone together, then a few without the dogs, and sometimes even an outfit change afterward.

With a standalone session, we have time to make that happen without watching the clock.

For this couple, including their dogs wasn’t just a bonus. It was one of the main reasons they chose a full session.

5. You Want Your Holiday Photos Finished Early

One of the biggest advantages of booking a September session is simple—you get your images back long before the holiday rush.

That means plenty of time to order prints, design gifts, and, if you’re anything like me, spend way too long deciding which image belongs on your holiday card.

There’s no last-minute panic or hoping everything arrives before December.

It’s one less thing to think about during an already busy season.

Which Session Is Right for You?

Holiday mini sessions continue to be one of my favorite offerings because they’re efficient, fun, and a wonderful tradition for so many families.

But if your schedule is complicated, you want a specific location, you’d like to include pets, or you simply want a slower, more personalized experience, a standalone family session may be the better choice.

Neither option is better—they’re simply designed for different needs.

The best session is the one that fits your family, your priorities, and the experience you’re hoping to have this holiday season.
