Why Halloween Became Their Family Tradition

Every family has their thing.

Maybe it’s matching pajamas and Christmas cards or it’s a trip to the pumpkin patch every October.

For Amanda and her daughter, Rayla, Halloween has always been the holiday.

I’ve been photographing this family for well over a decade. Long before Rayla was born, I photographed Amanda’s engagement, wedding, pregnancy announcement, maternity session, newborn session, and every family session since. Watching families grow over the years is one of my favorite parts of this job, but one thing that’s always made this family stand out is that they do things their own way.

Instead of sending Christmas cards, they send Halloween cards.

Every year they dream up costumes, dress up together, and celebrate the season with photos that feel completely like them. Honestly, I love that they never felt pressured to follow tradition just because everyone else does.

Your Family Doesn’t Have to Celebrate the Same Way Everyone Else Does

One of the best parts about family photography is that there really aren’t any rules.

If your kids absolutely light up when they put on a superhero cape, become a princess, or transform into their favorite movie character, why not document that?

Halloween costumes usually get worn for one night before they’re tucked away in a closet. Yet so much creativity, excitement, and personality goes into choosing them.

Those are memories worth saving too.

Our First-Ever Halloween Mini Sessions

After years of photographing Amanda and Rayla’s Halloween tradition, I finally decided it was time.

This year we’re offering our very first Halloween Mini Sessions at our in-home garage studio in Tempe.

Rather than building a themed set, we’re keeping everything simple with clean white paper backdrops. That gives every costume room to shine, whether your child shows up as a pirate, a dinosaur, Wednesday Addams, Taylor Swift or something completely original.

Here are a few images from our Valentine’s minis and some blank slate shots from the space so you can see exactly what the studio looks like. Think of it as a blank canvas that lets the costumes become the focus.

Sessions are quick, fun, and designed to fit into a busy weekend.

Why We’re Hosting Them Before Halloween Or Halloween Day!

Many families want their photos before Halloween so they can post them, print them, or even use them for Halloween cards while the excitement is happening. That’s why we’ll be photographing these minis the Saturday before Halloween, with galleries delivered in time for the big day.

We will also be offering a quick 2 min sitting on halloween day designed as a pre-trick or treat! We will have candy & music and fun! But your images will be delivered in a day or two after halloween!

If our Halloween Mini Session dates do not work for your family, don’t worry.

Our junior photographer, Mateo, photographs his own clients and may have additional availability around Halloween. It’s a great option if your schedule is packed or you need a different date.
