Understanding The Value Of Quality Photography: Why the Investment is Worth It

Understanding The Value Of Quality Photography

Did you ever wonder why photographers charge what they charge? Or are you a photographer struggling with how to price yourself?

Well, the common phrase “you get what you pay for” is extremely true with this creative and technical based industry. When it comes to capturing life’s most precious moments or your brands whole image, the cost of hiring a professional photographer can often spark a debate. While some might question why quality photographers charge what they do, understanding the intricacies of their craft can shed light on why this investment is worthwhile.

Here’s a closer look at the factors that contribute to the cost and why paying for quality photography can be a valuable investment.

1. The Cost of Quality Equipment

Professional experienced photographers invest heavily in top-tier equipment. High-quality cameras, lenses, lighting gear, and editing software and computers/monitors with great screens, calibrators and fast processors come with hefty price tags.

These tools are essential for capturing sharp, vibrant, and detailed high quality images.

Just as a chef uses quality knives and ingredients to create a remarkable dish, photographers rely on their equipment to deliver exceptional results.

2. Small Business Behind The Scenes – Taxes & Overhead

Understanding The Value Of Quality Photography

Unless you run a small business yourself, most people do not understand the major expense & know how it takes to legally & properly run a small business. But there are some pretty significant costs that help small businesses know how price out their work.

High end professional photographers usually run their small business full time. It’s their sole source of income and livelihood. Some also often have employees to pay as well. Which means -paying double Medicare/ss taxes (15%) for self employment on remaining profits and matching 1/2 employees taxes too!

This overhead cost alone means services will be higher with a small business than a corporate employee based company. So keep this in mind as you are a supporting a local small business 🙂 which we all love !

Some other overhead costs, but not even close to all of them… keep in mind even though they are writes offs on the taxable profit front- they still cost the small business money out of pocket…

  • lots of electricity lol
  • upgraded WiFi plan for heavy uploading
  • office supplies
  • insurance on gear & the business
  • cpa/legal fees
  • memberships to host photos
  • software outside of editing
  • office space
  • car/fuel for travel to shoots
  • studio and rental fees
  • employee wages
  • And the list goes on…

Some of these things make a difference in what a photographer chooses to charge. For example, if they are not a professional full-time photographer, (nothing wrong with this) it’s just that they are not going to have the same heavy load of necessary tools/overhead costs.

3. Expertise & Experience

Understanding The Value Of Quality Photography

The skill set of a seasoned photographer is honed through years of practice and experience.

From mastering the nuances of lighting and composition to understanding how to work with various subjects and environments, their expertise is what sets them apart.

This knowledge allows them to anticipate and navigate challenges, ensuring that every shot is captured at its best.

The cost reflects not just their time but the accumulated wisdom and proficiency that make their work stand out.

4. Time Invested Pre-Shoot

A successful photo session doesn’t start when the camera clicks. Experienced full time photographers ARE creative directors they invest a significant amount of time in preparation before the shoot even begins and know how to direct on set.

This includes consultations with clients, scouting locations, planning the shoot’s concept, and arranging necessary permits or permissions.

Each of these steps is crucial for ensuring that the shoot goes smoothly and that the final images meet the client’s expectations.

5. The Creative Talent & Process

Photography is as much an art as it is a technical skill. In my opinion, it’s a balance of both! This is the part that often truly sets photographers apart and draws you to one artists style over another. Their unique creativity and eye.

A photographer brings creativity and vision to their work, transforming a simple moment into a compelling narrative.

This creative process involves not just posing our subjects and framing shots but also envisioning how different elements will come together to create an impactful image… and considering the end goal & the clients authentic personality and knowing how to show that visually.

Creativity requires time and mental energy, which is reflected in the cost of their services.

6. The Shoot Itself

During the actual photo session, photographers are fully immersed in their craft.

They direct, adjust settings, manage lighting, and ensure that every detail aligns with their creative vision.

This intense focus and multitasking can be physically and mentally demanding.

The fee charged also accounts for the effort and attention required to ensure that every aspect of the shoot is executed flawlessly.

7. Post-Shoot Style/ Editing

One of the most time-consuming aspects of professional photography is the editing process. Not even half our hours are actually on set shooting.  Professional photographers cannot simply hand over an image since it’s not in jpeg format yet- it’s unusable/viewable for anyone without profession software to process the RAW files. (or develop and scan the film to process and edit)

This is why you may think the on set hourly rate a photographer is charging seems higher than a lawyer but it’s NOT! lol. When pricing yourself as a photographer you have to factor in time pre-shoot, overhead costs or gear/software and taxes but mostly post production hours! A 1 hour shoot is closer to 15-20 hours from your hired professional. This price is reflected in the package.  So let’s take this for an example: A $2000 fee for a 2 hour shoot is really close to 40 hours of work. So that is actually $50 hourly before overhead & taxes. So your photographer is really only earning approx $17 hourly after tax & operating costs for their pay.

After the shoot, photographers spend many hours meticulously reviewing, selecting, and editing images. To achieve the highest quality photographers that do not use filters (like me) are hand working or batch editing each image/set. This includes

  • creative selection of the best images (longest process for me)
  • color correction & enhancing each photo (one by one for me)
  • And this doesn’t even address the extra hours that master retouching would require if needed

This post-production work is essential for transforming raw images into polished, professional-grade photographs. This work reflects their style.

The investment in editing software and the skill to use it effectively are also factored into the overall cost.

8. Professionalism & Reliability

High end photographers bring a level of professionalism and reliability that ensures a smooth experience. They don’t ditch or no call / no show. They don’t show up, pint & shoot unprepared. This is their job and their career depends on it.

They understand the importance of meeting deadlines, managing expectations, and providing exceptional customer service.

Their commitment to delivering high-quality results is backed by a reputation built on trust and consistent performance.

This reliability is invaluable, particularly for significant shoots like branding campaigns, weddings, corporate functions, events, or newborn, maternity, and even family portraits.

9. Delivering a Unique Experience

Last but maybe the most important, ultimately, hiring a quality photographer is about more than just the photos; it’s about the experience they offer.

From helping clients feel comfortable in front of the camera to creating a personalized approach that captures the essence of their subject, professional photographers provide a unique and memorable experience.

This level of service and personalization is part of what makes the investment worthwhile.

In Conclusion

Investing in a quality photographer is an investment -in not just quality photos but captured feelings, memories, moments or creating your whole brand identity and providing an experience with unparalleled precision and artistry.

The cost reflects not only the high-quality equipment and extensive experience but also the time and creativity dedicated to each aspect of the process.

By understanding these factors, you can appreciate the value and investment (or help price your own services) that a professional photographer brings and make a decision that will result in cherished images or a successful brand for years to come.

At the end of the day, it’s not my intension to shame anyone into an investing in a quality experienced professional photographer.

This is a personal decision and there are plenty of reasons to go with someone less experienced, like budgets & goals- But I felt like this article could be extra helpful not only for people trying to just understand but to other photographers trying to price themselves! And it was fun to write!!!!
